Dear donors and supporters,

As we approach the end of summer, I am delighted to embrace the transition into fall and to celebrate the start of new things.

The fall semester is about to begin! We are beyond ready for the energy and excitement that comes with new and returning students, and faculty being present here. Many of these students we look forward to welcoming are able to start this new semester thanks to your support. Thank you for being a part of this journey with us!

We are also very much looking forward to introducing more of our community members to our new Superintendent/President, Michael Gutierrez. If you have yet to meet him in person, please plan to attend the Community Welcome Barbecue being hosted in his honor on Friday, September 23, 2022, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Hartnell College.  If you’d like to attend, please RSVP here: https://hartnellfoundation.org/community-welcome-event-for-president-gutierrez/ Hope to see you there!

ALUM MAKES GIFT TO HELP STUDENTS SUCCEED IN AGRICULTURE

When Emil Yappert was a teenager, he was driving a dusty tractor on his family’s farm when a fertilizer salesman stopped in to visit his father. Emil was impressed with the salesman and asked, “how can I get a job like yours?” The salesman advised Emil to go to college and get in touch when he graduated. Emil followed this advice and when he graduated, the salesman’s company hired him.

Just as Emil was given an opportunity so many years ago, he would like to provide opportunity now to young people intending to work in the agriculture industry. He has done this by making an immediate gift to the Hartnell College Foundation that will support graduating students transferring to a four-year university to study agriculture. His gift will provide scholarships for two students per year over the next seven years.

He has also included the Hartnell College Foundation in his trust, which will fund the Emil A. Yappert Endowed Scholarship Fund. This fund will support two transfer students in agriculture per year in perpetuity.

“It has been a good life. I’ve done well at work and financially, and I would like to give others the same opportunity,” Emil said. “Education is important, and it is getting more and more expensive, so if I can help, that would be great.”

Emil was born in 1932 to a Swiss immigrant father and an Italian immigrant mother. Raised in Watsonville, he graduated from Watsonville High School in 1951, Hartnell College in 1953, and Cal Poly in 1955. In high school, he was a 4H Monterey County All-Star and a State Farmer with Future Farmers of America. He came to Hartnell College to study agriculture and was his Freshman Class Vice President and Sophomore Class President.

After graduating from Cal Poly, Emil was married and then drafted into the army. His first stop was training at Ft. Ord. In 1956 he shipped out on a military transport from the Monterey Bay, through the Panama Canal, to Germany, where he was stationed for two years. After the army, Emil worked in the fertilizer and pesticide business, eventually owning his own companies. At the end of his career, he owned a company that worked with golf courses and in landscaping and ornamentals.

Emil lights up when he talks about his four children, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He enjoys spending time with his family, as well as following the Golden State Warriors and San Francisco 49ers. He is really looking forward to celebrating his 90th birthday this December.

Thank you, Emil, for leaving a legacy at Hartnell College inspired by your love for agriculture and desire to provide opportunities to students now and in the future.

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE
The benefit of a bequest

Thank you for your generous support of our organization and our charitable mission. Your gifts are an important and significant affirmation of your trust and lasting confidence in our organization. With your help, our work will continue well into the future.

As someone who plans well and looks to the future, we would like to ask you to consider complementing your annual gifts with a long-term investment in our mission. You can increase the impact of your giving and leave a lasting legacy by including a testamentary gift, sometimes referred to as a bequest, to Hartnell College Foundation in your will or estate plan.

The benefit of a bequest is that it will not change your lifestyle. You can choose to leave cash, stock, real estate, a percentage of your IRA, or your estate to Hartnell College Foundation in your will, while also continuing to control and use your assets. Should you choose to include us in your plans, your gift will make a lasting difference to those we serve.

If you need assistance with estate planning, we have resources that can help you and your attorney.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at 831-444-2446 or email me at jcruz@hartnell.edu with questions or to let us know how we can serve you.
