Dear donors and supporters,
As the weather brings us a bit of chill and soft rain, it warms my heart to see the impact that your partnership with the Hartnell College Foundation is having in supporting our students. Your support continues to provide much-needed scholarships and sustain programs that give our students access to the best education possible. You play a truly significant role in their success.
This weekend we will present our first annual awards for service and distinction in the arts at a new event: Kaleidoscope: A Celebration of the Arts at Hartnell College. The five honorees selected have made a huge difference at Hartnell and beyond as professors, donors, students, distinguished alumni, and more. Read about them below. For more information about this event, to get your tickets, or make a donation, please click HERE.
In the next weeks, we will be excited to provide another opportunity for you to support students at Hartnell through Monterey County Gives! We are honored to participate for the second year in a row to promote philanthropy and raise funds for scholarships. When you see a post about MC Gives, please share it with your friends and family.
Take good care and be well!

HARTNELL AND THE ARTS
Celebrating the influencers
The Hartnell College Foundation is proud to present Kaleidoscope: A Celebration of the Arts at Hartnell College. This one-of-a-kind event will take place on Saturday, November 5, 2022, starting at 2:00 p.m. inside the Willard Lewallen STEM Center on our Main Campus. In its first year, Kaleidoscope will welcome community members to enjoy special presentations from the arts programs, a silent auction and raffle, local bites, local wines, and the presentation of the Hartnell College Arts Awards. The honorees are:
Arts Legacy Award – Jack Killian*
Jack Killian generously included Hartnell College Foundation in his estate plans, giving more than $1.5 million to establish an Endowed Scholarship to provide scholarships to students majoring in music at Hartnell College. He enjoyed playing the trumpet, trombone, and various reed instruments. He was an active member of a marching band and played in various local dance bands. After serving in the Army, Jack moved to Salinas and became a teacher at Washington Middle School, teaching science and mathematics. He retired in 1983 to enjoy golf and playing in various local musical groups. Jack was a long-time supporter of the arts in Salinas – more specifically, the arts at Hartnell.

Distinguished Alumnus in the Arts – Robert Brill
Robert Brill is a three-time Tony Award nominee. His credits include Ain’t Too Proud: The Life And Times of The Temptations, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, and Assassins, as well as the set and club design for the critically acclaimed revival of Cabaret, at both the Kit Kat Klub and the legendary Studio 54, plus many other Broadway plays. He is a founding member of Sledgehammer Theatre, a recipient of the Michael Merritt Award for Excellence in Design and Collaboration, and is professor of Scenic Design at the University of California San Diego. He is honored to be acknowledged as a Distinguished Alumnus in The Arts by Hartnell College.
Distinguished Community Arts Hero – Trish Triumpho Sullivan
Trish Triumpho Sullivan held her first exhibit of photographs and sculpture at the Hartnell College Gallery as a student in 1996. That same year, she was one of the founders of Bailando con la Muerte, an inclusive community Día de Los Muertos event that has been bringing all cultures together through the arts for over 25 years. She is a Boronda Scholar who studied the art and culture of Islamic Spain. She said this experience and mentorship from Hartnell College professors inspired her to continue on to university. She is the founder of the 1st Fridays Art Walk in Downtown Salinas and was instrumental in bringing the California Welcome Center as well as the Salinas Valley 411 Tourism Project to the community. She currently teaches art and photography part-time at Hartnell and runs a book and music store in Downtown Salinas.
The Western Stage Distinguished Honoree – Ron Danko
One of Ron’s lasting experiences with The Western Stage was directing Man of La Mancha in 1974, where he met his wife, Aurélie. Ron’s role as the first artistic director for The Western Stage laid the groundwork for the program’s long-running success. A native of the Chicago area with a football scholarship, Ron Danko went off to Southern Illinois University with no thought of a future in theater. The first inkling came when he enjoyed being on stage with a fellow student who had comedic experience. Until 2020 he has spent over fifty years doing over 100 productions directing, acting, and building theater programs in four different community colleges, including: Flathead Community College, Mendocino Community College, Hartnell College, and Rogue Community College.
The Western Stage Distinguished Honoree – Stanley Crane
Stanley Crane received his undergraduate training at the University of Redlands and taught theatre at Valencia High School in Placentia, CA while he completed a Master’s in Lighting and Set Construction. He began to look at community colleges in California and was drawn to the Western Stage, the brainchild of Ron Danko. He was hired as the technical director/instructor. During that time, Ron and Stanley were able to grow the program into a viable regional educational program. After leaving the Western Stage, the next 40 years were spent teaching Speech/Communication for Hartnell College. He completed a Ph.D. in Education focusing on Organizational Behavior and Development. Stanley was the co-author and program director for three collaborative Title V Hispanic Serving Institutions federal grants which brought $8 million for educational improvement to Hartnell. In 2008, Stanley retired from full-time work at Hartnell.
Congratulations to all of this year’s honorees. The Hartnell College Foundation looks forward to celebrating together on November 5th. For more information, visit hartnellfoundation.org/
CREATE AN ENDOWMENT
Your Legacy Now and Forever
You already know the joy that comes from making a difference. When you join us in our mission, you have the immediate satisfaction of seeing your gift in action. An endowment gives you that same feeling, plus something more. It offers you the feeling of accomplishment knowing your positive impact will continue forever in your name, automatically.
A Simple Agreement
Something lasting forever sounds complicated, but it really is simple. An endowment has three essential parts:
- You make a gift to establish an endowment
- We sign an agreement with you detailing how the gift will be invested and distributed
- We handle the investments and distributions
How the Endowment Agreement Works
When you are considering an endowment, we work with you to word it, so it follows your wishes for all time, having the effect you desire. We create an agreement with all the details so you will know how the endowment will be invested and distributed.
We Do the Work – You Enjoy the Legacy
A major feature of the endowment is that once it is started, we do all the work. We invest the funds along with other endowed funds, creating economy of scale to maximize your endowment. We invest all our endowed funds according to our endowment policy. Set by our board, it generally provides that endowed funds are invested to produce stable, predictable growth. Each year a set percentage from your endowed fund is distributed according to your endowment agreement. If the endowed fund grows, so does your annual distribution. Your impact may become greater each year. You can also put a cap on your fund, so it ends after a certain term of years.
Possible for Everyone
You might think endowed funds are only for the wealthy. However, anyone can start one. You can create an endowment with your will or trust. It does not have to be created in your lifetime. In addition, you can fund it with an amazing array of assets. Real property (including life estates), life insurance, appreciated stock, investment accounts, jewelry and more are all possible sources of endowed funds.
