Dear donors and supporters,
Spring is finally here! I am reenergized with the rays of the sun now upon us. I hope you are enjoying this renewal as well and looking to a great year ahead.
I have so much great news to share with you! Today, I want to focus on the power of philanthropy via the Morgan Charitable Foundation. Thanks to their kindness, the Hartnell College Foundation just distributed 267 scholarships, mostly $500 each, to students pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education. More details in the story to follow.
To students, scholarships like this one provide that boost of confidence they need to continue with their education. We are so grateful for the generosity of this foundation that is literally funding dreams.
In May, we bring Party IN the Library in its original glory. You can still sponsor, become a member of the President’s Circle, or buy tickets. Go to LINK for more.
Have a joyful day!

MORGAN CHARITABLE FOUNDATION
Early Childhood Education Students Granted Scholarships
Last week, the Hartnell College Foundation and the Morgan Charitable Foundation hosted a virtual Early Childhood Education (ECE) Scholarship Celebration to earmark the 267 scholarships issued in March 2023. Another round of scholarships will be dispersed in fall 2023.
“The scholarships are being awarded to help our students continue their studies in Early Childhood Education,” said Hartnell College Superintendent/President, Michael Gutierrez. “We commend students for pursuing a field that has such a tremendous impact on our children, their families, and our community.”
Students were selected for the scholarship if they were currently enrolled in the Spring 2023 term and registered as pursuing an ECE degree or certificate. Those attending the virtual celebration included President Gutierrez; President/CO-Founder of Morgan Charitable Foundation, Becky Morgan; Hartnell ECE students Xitlali Reynoso and Amy Little; CEO of California Forward, Micah Weinberg; Executive Director of First 5 of Monterey County, Francine Rodd; Director of Bright Beginnings, Sonja Koehler; and Senior Director of the Early Learning Program at Monterey County Office of Education, Sonia Jaramillo.
Students receiving these scholarships shared how much this award means to them. To follow, some of the comments of appreciation received at the Foundation:
“This scholarship means a lot to me. This scholarship will help me to achieve my career goal of pursuing my certificate in early childhood education. This scholarship will help me to pursue my future job as a teacher’s assistant for preschool children.”
“This scholarship will help me continue my education. Due to my dad’s passing almost two years ago, my family and I have been struggling financially. This money will go to any books and expenses that I need for school since the money I earn at work goes to helping my mom with the bills.”
“This will help me pay off my laptop, which has helped me so much to achieve my goal of getting my AA in Early Childhood Education.”
“This scholarship will help me with transportation and the cost of class materials. I live 50 miles away from the main Hartnell campus and this will really help me with gas and textbook purchases. I’m very grateful for the consideration of this scholarship.”
“Thank you so much! This will help me a lot with my transportation, because right now I am doing my practicum at Frank Paul Elementary School. I am going to use it to pay for my taxi transportation. God bless!”
The Hartnell College Foundation appreciates partners like the Morgan Charitable Foundation for their vision to support students’ dreams and propel them to success via scholarships.
TAXES ON YOUR MIND?
We have some ideas
Often the threat of taxes makes big news, but the ways of lowering them do not. We have tools to help you not only lower your tax burden but also create benefits you may never have considered. Consider:
CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY
Fund a gift annuity with us and receive an income tax deduction this year and fixed payments for life.
CHARITABLE REMAINDER UNITRUST
Fund a unitrust and receive payments on a schedule and at a rate (within limits) of your choosing. Receive an income tax deduction and provide for you and your spouse.
GIFT OF STOCK
If you have appreciated assets, such as stock, you can reduce capital gains taxes by funding one of the vehicles above, or by simply transferring it to our mission. You must never sell the stock or asset but transfer it directly to us.
IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER
If the thought of paying income taxes on a required minimum distribution (RMD) is a bad idea for you, consider transferring money from your IRA (up to $100,000) and satisfy your RMD without paying income tax on the transfer.
All these are designed to lower your income and capital gains taxes. In some cases, you will create new tax-advantaged payments! To learn how we can help you and your financial advisor meet your goals and minimize taxes, call or email Vice President of Advancement and Development/Executive Director for the Foundation, Jackie Cruz at jcruz@hartnell.edu or call (831) 444-2446, or our Director of Philanthropy, Kristine Edmunds at kedmunds@hartnell.edu or by phone at (831) 755-6903.
