Dear supporters and friends,

We are open! This summer, our Main Campus and Soledad Center opened up to welcome students and faculty for in-person instruction. What a joy it is to see that slowly, but surely, we are able to meet together.

As we continue to move toward opening at full capacity, we also understand that for some students, taking online classes is most effective. For this reason, Hartnell College will continue to offer online instruction as we seek to meet student needs.

Last month, I was filled with gratitude as our signature annual fundraiser, Party In Near the Library brought together hundreds of donors, supporters, and friends to safely enjoy the company of others in the beautiful new campus plaza. What a great way to christen that space!

I am proud to announce that we raised over $560,000 to support Hartnell College students! Thank you to all staff, volunteers, sponsors, donors, and supporters for making this a huge success!

One of the highlights was student speaker Michelle Vazquez who spoke about the power of an education. Michelle is a TRiO student who just graduated with an AA in Biology and is heading to UC Davis for an internship before deciding which UC she will transfer to in the Fall. Michelle is also this year’s recipient of the Jack Baskin Foundation Scholarship and aspires to be a doctor. We know she will achieve that and more!

We have awesome students and we also have great volunteers on our board. Congratulations to David Warner for receiving the 2021 Hartnell College Foundation Leadership Award. Congratulations David!

Wishing you a great summer! Till next time,

Jackie Cruz

WELCOMING NEW FOUNDATION STAFF
Kristine Edmunds, director of philanthropy

With 27 years of experience with nonprofits in Monterey County, Kristine Edmunds joins our team at the Hartnell College Foundation as our new director of philanthropy.

Edmunds comes to Hartnell following a brief interim executive director role at the Center for Community Advocacy in Salinas, preceded by 13 years as director of advancement at York School in Monterey. Before that, she worked in development roles at Cal State Monterey Bay for nine years, including as executive director of development.

“I’ve known Kristine for many years, and I know how respected she is in the community in the non-profit sector, particularly in philanthropy,” said Foundation board President Judy Sulsona as she welcomed Edmunds at a board meeting.

Prior to moving to Monterey County, she was legislative director in the Washington, D.C. office of a U.S. Congressman and taught English as a Peace Corps volunteer in Cameroon.

“I’m just such a strong believer in the mission of Hartnell and what the college is doing for our community, so it’s really an honor to be here, and I look forward to working with all of you,” said Kristine.

Welcome to the team Kristine!

DONOR ADVISED FUND
Managing and maximizing your giving

Are you looking for a simple, flexible tool that allows you to manage and maximize your giving to support the causes that matter most to you? Would you like to have the ability to make a single significant gift to support multiple charities? Are you interested in a way to simplify your annual and lifetime charitable giving?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should consider creating a donor advised fund (or DAF).

A DAF is your own charitable fund, named after you and administered by us. You can make contributions to your fund, which we will invest to benefit the causes you care about. Once your fund is created, you can advise us to make grants from your fund to support the work of your favorite charitable causes.

THE ADVANTAGES OF A DAF
A donor advised fund has several advantages when compared to a private foundation. The start-up time and costs are minimal for DAFs, and gifts to DAFs are generally deductible at fair market value. In addition, a DAF is not subject to the distribution requirements and certain excise taxes faced by private foundations.

WE CAN HELP!
We would be pleased to work with you and your advisors to discuss how a donor advised fund can benefit you. If you would like to start the process or have any questions, please contact me at jcruz@hartnell.edu or call 831-755-6810.
