Andrea Bailey
Commitment to Community Acceleration

The Hartnell College Foundation is happy to announce that Andrea Bailey, Public Affairs Representative, Corporate Affairs at Chevron, will receive this year’s Leadership Award. She will be celebrated at this year’s Party in the Library on May 31, 2024.

“For the committee, it was a natural choice,” said Jackie Cruz, Vice President of Development and Advancement and Executive Director for the Hartnell College Foundation. “Andrea came to us in 2018 and has since been one of our most valued supporters and cheerleaders, especially in STEM and K-12 education – she is a staple of hope and leadership in the growth of our programs and community.”

Bailey is an active participant in this partnership with Hartnell College. She has served as co-chair for the President’s STEM Task Force, on the Hartnell Foundation’s Board, chair of the Foundation Board Nominating Committee (2020-22), has been a speaker and emcee for the Women’s Education & Leadership Institute (WELI), and continues to be an active supporter of Hartnell College.

“My mom has been the biggest influencer when it comes to community service,” she said.  “She was always active in politics, served on many commissions and boards, and was a very vocal advocate, always giving back to the community. She would often bring me to events, meetings, etc. Community service and philanthropy were instilled in me at a very young age.” 

Andrea feels humbled by this special recognition.

“This award is important for so many reasons, but mostly because I love what Hartnell College stands for,” she said. “I look at the list of past recipients in this category, and I feel so honored to be a part of a class that inspires and transforms this community.”

Bailey adds that she lives her daily life by leading by example. She enjoys working with different organizations to support their goals, mentor them, contribute to their growth, and connect them to opportunities.

Andrea is responsible for developing and implementing their social investment strategy, community and stakeholder engagement strategies, government affairs, and managing community relationships in her role with Chevron. She works closely with local nonprofits, helping them serve their causes and communities while creating and building relationships that link resources with organizational needs through sustainable models that build capacity and maximize effectiveness.

She is thankful to work for a company that aligns with her values, supports her input, allows for independent decision-making, and, most importantly, cares about the community, values education, and supports staff with their personal and professional passions.

“Hartnell is involved in every bit of Monterey County, and I enjoy how they support students and wrap their arms around them during their time as a student and even after graduation,” she said. “For us at Chevron, it’s amazing how Hartnell gets students excited about STEM, and I am so happy to provide that platform as well.”

Andrea has her permanent home in Marina but was raised in Dublin, CA. After high school, she got married and had three children: Nicole, Erika, and Najee. She also has one granddaughter, Zoe, whom she enjoys spending time with often.

Higher education has always been important to her. She attended Ohlone College in Fremont, transferred to Cal State Hayward (now East Bay), and earned a BA in Business Administration. She earned an MBA in Management & Organizational Leadership at UC Berkeley and completed her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.

She worked for the American Red Cross and was promoted to CEO within her first four years. In 2009, she joined Chevron’s corporate affairs team with over 15 years of nonprofit experience and an extensive background in fundraising, capital campaigns, board and donor development, grant management, and organizational and strategic planning. 

“I love the work that I do and will continue to do so till I decide to retire,” she said. “I will continue to travel around the world with my next destination being Greece – but my biggest joy right now, is witnessing and experiencing my granddaughter Zoe; I want her to grow up to be strong, smart, bold, and fearless – at four years old, she is already all those things.”

She was also chair of the Hartnell Foundation Board Nominating Committee  2020-2022.

Hartnell College Unveils El Mercado to Combat Student Food Insecurity

Hartnell College in Salinas, CA, is proud to announce the inauguration of El Mercado, an innovative on-campus market slated to open its doors on April 1, 2024 from 12:00pm-2:00pm in the Student Center, Building C, Room 132. Developed by the Hartnell College SOUL Center, El Mercado aims to alleviate the challenges of food insecurity and limited access to essential items faced by students, offering a diverse array of groceries, personal care products, and basic necessities free of charge. Recognizing the profound impact of student well-being on academic performance, Hartnell College is taking proactive steps to ensure every student has the support needed to thrive academically and personally.

Mario Flores, Director of Basic Needs at Hartnell College, expressed the significance of El Mercado as more than just a resource center, but a testament to the institution’s unwavering commitment to student success and holistic development. With its dignified and supportive environment, El Mercado seeks to empower students by providing access to nutritious food, hygiene products, school supplies, and childcare items, fostering a nurturing space where all students can flourish. President/Superintendent Michael Gutierrez echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Hartnell College’s dedication to creating an academic environment free from the distractions of basic needs insecurities, paving the way for student achievement and growth.  Read more here.
