Party in the Library Leadership Award Honorees

At our 18th celebration, we celebrate Andrea Bailey for her exceptional leadership and unwavering support.

Andrea Bailey is a dynamic force within the Salinas Valley, holding the esteemed position of Public Affairs Representative in Corporate Affairs at Chevron. Her professional excellence is exemplified by her role as Vice President on the Hartnell College Foundation Board of Directors since 2018. Additionally, she is pivotal in various initiatives, co-chairing the President’s STEM Task Force and Monterey County STEM Talent Expo and contributing to committees such as WELI Soirée and Party in the Library.

Her dedication to education and community empowerment shines through her longstanding commitment to Hartnell College and its students. Andrea’s unwavering support is a testament to her deep-seated belief in the transformative power of education.

On the 16th celebration of Party in the Library, the Hartnell College Foundation celebrates John Romans for his exceptional leadership and support.

John, a giant in the Agriculture community and lifetime South County resident and friend, has been a champion of Hartnell for a number of

years and, since 2017, a Foundation Board Member. His inspiration to champion Hartnell students and internships was the late and beloved Andy Matsui, whose giving was a catalyst for John’s generosity, Due to John’s funding support for internships through Party in the Library over the years, dozens of students will have had the opportunity to complete life-changing internships. John has also played an instrumental role in supporting the original campaign to construct Hartnell’s King City campus, joining with Susan Gill among other visionary leaders to help South County students achieve their personal and career goals. When the opportunity arose to expand the center in South County, he provided additional support, thereby opening the doors for entire families to attend Hartnell and for STEM degrees to be offered in King City. Each of these honorees has demonstrated both significant leadership and meaningful efforts on behalf of the Foundation, the College, students and alumni that go above and beyond normal board or committee work. On this special 15th anniversary of Party in the Library, the Hartnell College Foundation celebrates David Warner for his outstanding leadership and support.

David sets the standard for humble, faithful and committed leadership in all that he does for our community. The Hartnell College Foundation is grateful for having benefitted from his gifts and talents over the past eight years.

He served as a Board member from 2013-2019 (chairing the nominating committee twice in that time), as the Chair for our first Strategic Plan for Operations Committee and as our current Co-chair for the committee. He also faithfully serves on our Investment Committee and was instrumental in launching our donor communication plan in 2016. David’s commitment

to serving his community is evident in his experience with other non-profit organizations in Monterey County and beyond. He serves as a Board member and Treasurer for Sun Street Centers, on the finance committee for the Community Foundation for Monterey County, and as a member of the Stanford Alumni Consulting Team, where retired Stanford graduates offer pro-bono consulting services to non-profit organization on the Central Coast.

Each of these honorees has demonstrated both significant leadership and meaningful efforts on behalf of the Foundation, the College, students and alumni that go above and beyond normal board or committee work.

On the 14th anniversary of Party in the Library, Hartnell College Foundation celebrates incredible leadership in our community by presenting this award to Anne Secker for her outstanding leadership and support.

Anne Secker epitomizes great leadership, exemplifying class, sophistication and deep dedication to her community in everything she does. The Hartnell College Foundation is grateful to have benefitted from her incredible talents for a number of years. Under her presidency on the Hartnell College Foundation Board, we were able to become one of the top 25 foundations in the country for community colleges of our size. Anne has also been instrumental in the launching of our Legacy Society and 100 by 100 Legacy

Her experience in the nonprofit world and her commitment to service is extensive, including the Elkhom Slough Foundation, various wine and vintner groups, Monterey County Historical Resources Review Board, Ag Against Hunger and CHISPA. Anne’s involvement and work also span to affiliations with the Monterey County Bar Assoc.

Women Lawyers Assoc. and CA Women Lawyers. Our staff, board and anyone who is fortunate to work with Anne knows what an amazing woman, community leader, and mentor she is and we are pleased to have the opportunity to thank her and honor her in this very special way.

These honorees have exhibited significant effort and leadership on behalf of the Foundation, the College, students, and alumni, that go above and beyond normal board or committee work.

On the 13th anniversary of Party in the Library, Hartnell College Foundation presented the award to Nate Holaday for his outstanding leadership to support the College and Foundation. Nate Holaday was always involved in agriculture and a committed supporter of Hartnell College. Beyond being a decedent of the College’s name sake, Nate was a champion for Hartnell.

He was an instrumental supporter of the King City Education Center and bringing Hartnell to South County, Further, he was a supporter of the campaign to establish the Agricultural Business and Technology Institute. As a result of a unique partnership between Hartnell College and the Salinas Valley Agricultural Industry, we are able to serve over 1,200 students every year pursuing careers in the dynamic agricultural industry. 

On this, the 12th anniversary of Party in the Library, Hartnell College Foundation will present this award to Alfred Diaz-Infante for his outstanding leadership to support the College and Foundation.

Alfred, a Hartnell Alumnus, was deeply involved with Hartnell and its mission for many years, serving as a Hartnell College Foundation board member 2007-2017 and President 2011-2015. Alfred was a founding member of the Salinas Valley Promise and also joined the Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System’s (now Salinas Valley Health) board. In addition, Alfred co-chaired the Party in the Library committee in 2017. His leadership and passion helped raised $403,000 in support of Hartnell’s programs and students.

Alfred’s leadership was instrumental in securing philanthropic gifts that have launched forward-thinking programs and partnerships that are changing higher education in the Salinas Valley. His leadership extends far beyond this event, to supporting numerous Hartnell College and community initiatives.

On the 11th annual Party in the Library, Hartnell College Foundation celebrates incredible leadership in our community by presenting this award to Cathy Schlumbrecht  and Bob Martin for their outstanding leadership and support.

Cathy Schlumbrecht has been the spark plug igniting community organizations and their volunteers to set and achieve remarkable goals for more than two decades. The recently retired Senior Vice Président and 33 year employee at Comerica Bank, Cathy has melded her role as a business banker with engagement in the larger community in the best traditions of local banking. She has been one of the creative forces and organizers for the Party in the Library for 9 years which has allowed Hartnell to launch forward-thinking programs and partnerships that are changing higher education in the Salinas Valley.

Bob Martin has always been involved in agriculture and/committed supporter of Hartnell College. In 2006 he joined the Ag Steering* Committee at Hartnell College to seed and establish the Agricultural Business and Technology Institute. As a result of a unique partnership between Hartnell College and the Salinas Valley Agricultural Industry, we are able to serve over 1,200 students every year pursuing careers in the dynamic agricultural industry.

These honorees have exhibited significant effort and leadership on behalf of the foundation, the college, students, and alumni that go above and beyond normal board or committee work.

As 2016 marks our 10th anniversary of Party in the Library, Hartnell College Foundation will present this award to Butch Lindley for his outstanding involvement in this event and for his leadership to support the College and the Foundation.

Butch has been deeply involved with Hartnell for many years and has been instrumental in securing philanthropic gifts that have launched forward thinking programs and partnerships that are changing higher education in the Salinas Valley. Butch has been a member of the Ag Institute since its inception, a founding member of the President’s STEM Task Force, and served as a past member of the Monterey County Board of Supervisors. In addition, Butch provides expertise to our annual Party in the Library event as our extraordinary auctioneer. Tonight’s honoree has changed the lives of many in our community and continues to inspire all of us.

This is the ninth year for the Hartnell College Foundation Leadership Award that honors exceptional leaders who have distinguished themselves as valuable contributing members of society and the college in many ways.

The first Hartnell College Foundation Leadership Award was presented in 2007 to Gary Tanimura, in 2008 to David Gill, 2009 to Margaret D’Arrigo-Martin, 2010 to Nick Pasculli, 2011 to Bruce Taylor, 2012 to Susan Gill, 2013 to Andy Matsui, and in 2014 to Joanne Taylor Johnson.

These honorees have exhibited significant effort and leadership on behalf of the foundation, the college, students, and alumni that go above and beyond normal board or committee work.

For the first time ever, Hartnell College Foundation will present this award to two outstanding leaders. The 2015 Leadership Award is presented to Karen Fanoe and Kathy Moser for their outstanding involvement and support of the Hartnell College Foundation. Karen and Kathy co-founded Party in the Library in 2007 with vision and passion. As a result of their leadership, the event has raised over $2 million in support of Hartnell’s programs and students. Karen and Kathy’s leadership extends far beyond this event, to supporting numerous other college and community initiatives. Tonight’s honorees have changed the lives of many in our community and continue to inspire all of us.

This is the eighth year for the Hartnell College Foundation Leadership Award that honors an exceptional leader who has distinguished themselves as a valuable contributing member of society and the college in many ways. The first Foundation Leadership Award was presented in 2007 to Gary Tanimura, in 2008 to David Gill, in 2009 to Margaret D’Arrigo-Martin, in 2010 to Nick Pasculli, in 2011 to Bruce Taylor, in 2012 to Susan Gill, and in 2013 to Andy Matsui.

The honoree has exhibited significant effort and leadership on behalf of the foundation, college, students and alumni that go above and beyond normal board or committee work. The 2014 Hartnell College Foundation Leadership Award is presented to Joanne Taylor Johnson for her outstanding involvement and support of the Hartnell College Foundation.

Joanne has provided leadership as past board president, member of the President’s Task Force, founding member of the Hartnell College Legacy Society and provided the first endowment gift for the NASA SEMAA lab. Throughout her history with Hartnell College, she has changed the lives of countless students and continues to inspire all of us.

The 7th annual Hartnell College Foundation Leadership Award is presented to Mr. Andy Matsui for his outstanding involvement and support of the Computer Science and Information Technology Three Year Bachelor Degree program (CSIT-in-3). The Matsui Foundation has pledged $2 million in student scholarship support over the first three years of the CSIT-in-3 program. Thanks to the Matsui Foundation, Hartnell College and its partner CSUMB, have launched a national model of accelerated completion to a high wage, high demand degree and students will receive full ride scholarships, making this a life changing opportunity.

This is the sixth year for the foundation Leadership Award that honors an exceptional leader who has distinguished themselvef as a valuable contributing member of society and the college in many ways.

The Foundation Leadership Award was presented in 2007 to Gary Tanimura, in 2008 to David Gill, in 2009 to Margaret D’Arrigo-Martin, in 2010 to Nick Pasculli and in 2011 to Bruce Taylor.

The honoree has exhibited significant effort and leadership on behalf of the foundation, college, students and alumni that go above and beyond normal board or committee work.

The 2012 Hartnell College Foundation Leadership Award is presented to Susan Gill for her outstanding involvement and support of countless initiatives. Susan spearheaded the launching of the Hartnell King City Educational Capital Campaign, played an essential role in developing and growing the support for Party in the Library, and was a major force contributing to the success of the Agricultural Business and Technology Institute.

This is the fifth year for the Foundation Leadership Award that honors an exceptional leader who has distinguished themselves as a valuable contributing member of society and the college in many ways. The first Foundation Leadership Award was presented in 2007 to Gary Tanimura, in 2008 to David Gill, in 2009 to Margaret D’Arrigo-Martin and in 2010 to Nick Pasculli. The honoree has exhibited significant effort and leadership on behalf of the foundation, college, students and alumni that go above and beyond normal board or committee work. The 2011 Hartnell College Foundation Leadership Award is presented to Bruce Taylor for his outstanding involvement and support and his exemplary leadership in launching new programs including the Agricultural Business and Technology Institute and the Women’s Education Leadership Initiative.

This is the fourth year for the Foundation Leadership Award that honors an exceptional leader who has distinguished themselves as a valuable contributing member of society and the college in many ways.

The first Foundation Leadership Award was presented in 2007 to Gary Tanimura, in 2008 to David Gill, and in 2009 to Margaret D’Arrigo-Martin.

The 2010 Hartnell College Foundation Leadership Award is presented to Nicholas Pasculli for his outstanding involvement and support and his years of service as president of the Foundation.

The third annual Foundation Leadership Award honors an exceptional leader who has distinguished themselves as a valuable contributing member of society and the college in many ways.

The first Foundation Leadership Award was presented in 2007 to Gary Tanimura and the second annual award was presented in 2008 to David Gill, The honoree will have exhibited significant effort and leadership on behalf of the foundation, college, students and alumni that go above and beyond normal board or committee work. The 2009 Hartnell College Foundation Leadership Award is presented to Margaret D’Arrigo Martin for her outstanding involvement and support.

At the 2nd celebration of Party in the Library, the Hartnell College Foundation celebrates David Gill for his exceptional leadership and support. David is a generous donor and a driving force behind many nonprofit organizations from King City to Monterey. His quiet and steady involvement has inspired others and positively impacted education, youth development, health, and the arts. David’s roles as a founder, board member, volunteer, major donor, advisor, event chair, and strategic planner have earned him the title of “outstanding philanthropist.”

For 24 years, David has supported the Hartnell College Foundation, contributing to programs like the King City Education Center and its expansion, scholarships, athletics, the arts, and the Women’s Education and Leadership Institute. His volunteer leadership and fundraising efforts have brought in millions of dollars for Hartnell students. David also served on the Hartnell College Foundation Board of Directors and chairs the President’s Agriculture Steering Committee.

David and his wife, Susan, are involved in every major philanthropic effort in South County and are founding family members of the Southern Monterey County Foundation. They support organizations such as the Community Foundation for Monterey County, Monterey County Free Libraries, Ag Against Hunger, and the National Steinbeck Center.

David has served as Chair and is currently Vice Chair of the First Tee of Monterey County. He has been active in the Monterey County Farm Bureau, King City Young Farmers, Monterey County Business Council, and the Chamber of Commerce. The Hartnell College Foundation is grateful for David’s unwavering support and leadership.

Our very first Leadership Award honoree was awarded to Gary Tanimura!

Gary Tanimura has been a cornerstone of the Salinas Valley agricultural community from a young age. He attended Salinas High School, Hartnell College, and graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in Business. Gary began his career at his father and uncle’s business, Higashi and Tanimura, and co-founded Tanimura & Antle, Inc. in 1982. He oversees all Tanimura Family farming operations in the Salinas Valley.

A pivotal figure in the establishment of Hartnell’s Ag Institute, Gary played a major role in its inception and pledged $350,000 to support USDA Ag Research Internships. His leadership earned him the Hartnell College Foundation Leadership Award in 2007. Gary serves on the Ag Steering Committee and is a past president of the Hartnell College Foundation.

Gary is deeply involved in the community, participating in the Salinas Valley River Coalition, Monterey County Farm Bureau, Tanimura Family Foundation, and other local organizations. He resides in Salinas with his wife, Mayumi, and their two children, Selina and Michael. Gary’s dedication continues to transform the lives of residents in the Salinas Valley.
