Dear donors and supporters,

It is my hope that you are well and safe as we continue to navigate the weather patterns. I am proud to announce that we are establishing a separate Hartnell College Emergency Scholarship Fund for those students who have been impacted by the storms. Our hope is to assist as many students as we can and bring a little bit of relief as they continue their education while dealing with stressful life events.

On a lighter note, it is officially spring, although the weather tells us otherwise! But this means that we are gearing up for Party IN the Library. This year, we are returning to the library for an evening full of glam, delicious food, awesome drinks, a beautiful program, and a good time.

In 2023, the Hartnell College Foundation is presenting the Leadership Award to Kurt Gollnick, who has supported Hartnell College through his philanthropy, leadership, and expertise for many years.

I invite you to join us as a sponsor or as a guest on May 13, 2023, at 5:00 PM for an evening you will never forget.

Thank you for your ongoing support. Be well!

STORM RELIEF A Scholarship Fund Established for Students

The recent storms and subsequent flooding have been devastating for the community. Our hearts and minds are with those that have been adversely affected.

Hartnell College offers emergency scholarships for those in need. We are establishing a special fund to help students that have been impacted by the recent storms. Students have experienced lost income from lack of work, damage to homes, food insecurity, and difficulty paying rent, utility, and transportation costs. Juggling school and the need to pay rent and provide for families is always difficult, but the storms have exacerbated these financial strains, making the journey to degree completion more challenging. If you would like to help, you can call our office (831-755-6810) or click HERE.

LEADERSHIP AWARD Kurt Gollnick

The Hartnell College Foundation is happy to announce that Party In the Library is back ‘in’ the library! Join us on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. for the best party in town.

This year, our theme is Pathways, and it could not be more fitting to also honor one of our community champions, Kurt Gollnick, who will receive the Leadership Award at the event.

“He is a brilliant businessman with a kind and caring heart for the community,” said Hartnell College Foundation Executive Director, Jackie Cruz. “Kurt’s leadership has made a huge difference at Hartnell, and we are forever grateful.”

For many years, Kurt has been an integral part of Hartnell College. As a member of the Hartnell College Foundation Board, he served as Board Chair, Chair of the Investment Committee, Chair of the President’s Task Force Funding Plan, Co-Chair of the Party in the Library Committee, Chair of the Matsui Leadership Gift Committee, and as a member of the Ag Steering Committee. He also co-chaired the Measure T Campaign, along with Susan Gill and Alfred Diaz-Infante. The Foundation is honored to call him a loyal friend, generous supporter, and cherished member of this community.

Kurt is the owner of Rodnick.farm, producing wine grapes that express the distinct minerality of this unique terroir. He has been a Central Coast wine grape grower for 40 years, and recently “semi-retired” as the COO of Scheid Family Wines. He continues to be an integral part of the community and lends his expertise to local non-profit organizations, including his current passion project, the Salinas Regional Soccer Complex.

“Working with Kurt is magic,” said Cruz. “His energy is contagious, and he puts all his talents to work for the organizations he cares about.”

Dear donors and supporters,

As rain continues to pour, we are thinking about all those affected, including our students, many of whom are from families that have been deeply impacted by the loss of employment and by housing and food insecurity brought on by the flooding. We are in the process of setting up a fund for these students and their families and will tell you more soon. We are also keeping our friends and supporters in our thoughts and hope you are staying safe.

It is thanks to benefactors like you that we at Hartnell College Foundation can disperse thousands of dollars in scholarships to students each year. In addition, the programs you support provide enriching experiences that students would otherwise not be able to access.

Our feature story is a great example of how you can leave a lasting legacy through an endowment. I hope you get inspired and contact me if you are interested in legacy giving.

We are excited to share with you that Hartnell Student Laura Rivera, who was named Young Adult Philanthropist of the Year for the Central Coast in November, was featured in the Monterey County Weekly. You can read the article HERE.

Be well and be safe,

THE LARRY PEDROZA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP A Legacy to Support Student Dreams

“Larry always valued education – he thought it was the best way to get ahead and develop as a person,” said Tina Sohn of her late husband, Larry Pedroza. “He was always interested in learning.”

Pedroza graduated from Hartnell College with an AA Degree in Sociology in 1977. He went on to Sacramento State University and later to the University of Arizona. He acquired his bachelor’s and master’s degrees and started his doctorate in Sociology.

He passed away in early 2022. “He was a wonderful person, husband, and dad,” Tina said. “He was a great friend – always there – I miss him every day.”

Because of his passion for education, Tina established the Larry Pedroza Memorial Scholarship. It will be awarded annually to a current student at Hartnell majoring in Social and Behavioral Sciences and/or Sociology.

Pedroza grew up in Salinas and had two grown children from his first marriage. His family connection to Hartnell College includes his brother, Michael and a granddaughter, both of whom graduated from Hartnell. He felt that his experience at Hartnell jump-started his educational journey.

Tina and Larry met through a mutual friend at Rutgers University in New Jersey, where she is from. He started work there as Associate Director of the Learning Center. She held various positions, including Director of the Learning Center.  They loved to read, learn, and watch/discuss the daily news. They were married for 20 years.

“I started this endowment in his memory because education was very high in his priorities,” Tina said. “I want to give opportunities to others to have an education and make it a little easier for them.”

Tina is not new to endowments. She lost her mom five years ago and started an endowment in her name to support students in the nursing field. “My mom went back to school in her early 50s to get her nursing degree,” she said. “I admire that so much.”

She hopes that with this scholarship, students will get a head start in their education and learn to appreciate the power of learning just like Larry did.

“Doors will be open thanks to an education,” she said. “My hope is for scholarship recipients to continue on and pass on the opportunities to others.”

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS Give You Control

A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is an account you establish with a bank, investment company, or charity to help you organize your giving to the nonprofit organization(s) important to you.

Each time you contribute money or stocks to the fund, you receive an income tax deduction. Your account administrator invests your funds and when the timing is right for you, you tell the administrator to make a distribution. You choose the amount.

Benefits of a DAF

  • Time your contributions for maximum tax deductions
  • Give to charities when you want
  • Give anonymously through your fund
  • Name children and grandchildren as successor owners to create a legacy

Dear donors and supporters,

What a great day we had on Saturday!

The Women’s Education & Leadership Institute (WELI) Spring Soirée was a brilliant success thanks to the leadership of Co-Chairs Monica Tovar and Sharon Dilbeck. I am so thankful to our guests and sponsors for making this event one to remember.

Our lovely emcee, Andrea Bailey, did a great job keeping the event on point and on time. We are so appreciative of Andrea’s and Chevron’s commitment to higher education. Andrea is the Public Affairs Representative, Corporate Affairs for Chevron.

Our speakers were amazing! Thank you, Lina Gomez, for your insights on entrepreneurship; Esmeralda Owen for your commitment to mentorship; Tama Bistrian and Alla Zeltser for teaching us about forging friendships; and Drea Blackwell for showing us how to break barriers.

And to wrap things up with a red ribbon, WELI Scholar Alumna Maricarmen Gonzalez brought us to tears as she told her story and how mentorship changed her life. Enjoy her story below.

As always, thank you for your support and for your commitment to helping our students.

THE POWER OF MENTORSHIP A WELI Scholar Shares her Journey

The Women’s Education & Leadership Institute (WELI) Spring Soirée was held on Saturday, February 25, 2023, inside the Willard Lewallen STEM Center Building. The day was dressed in pinks, lilacs, and all the beautiful colors of the rainbow. One of the highlights of the day was the heartfelt speech by WELI Scholar Alumna Maricarmen Gonzalez.

As an undocumented, first-generation, and Latina student, she said her academic journey has not been easy. She encountered many obstacles and had to put herself first by advocating for herself toward the goals she wanted to accomplish.

“WELI provided me with a supportive environment where I connected with other women who shared similar experiences and aspirations as me,” she said. “WELI was not just financial support, but a community where I found comfort and friendship in facing challenges and seeking personal growth.”

Maricarmen, 22, grew up in Soledad and attended Soledad High School. She graduated in 2019 and immediately started her college career at Hartnell College. Because she completed college classes via concurrent enrollment and dual enrollment during high school, she graduated with three degrees in business administration, communication studies, and economics from Hartnell in 2021.  She is currently in her last semester at Sacramento State University majoring in business marketing.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to have been paired with Esmeralda Owen, who I now consider one of my role models. I still remember when I first saw her, I wanted her as my mentor!” she said. “Having her as a mentor has been a life-changing experience and I am honored now to have the privilege of working in her company and learning from her every day.”

Maricarmen is the Marketing and PR Coordinator for Precious Stone PR Inc. She started as an intern and quickly moved her way up. In addition, she is the spokesperson for public service announcements in Spanish for Monterey County Behavioral Health.

WELI’s focus on leadership, teamwork and personal development helps scholars personally and professionally. “I feel more confident and capable as a leader, and I am excited to bring these skills to both my academic and professional pursuits,” she said. “WELI has opened doors for me, and I am grateful for the connections I have made throughout and after this program.”

In May, Maricarmen will graduate with a bachelor’s degree. She is eager to continue her journey in marketing and television to use her passion and expertise to connect with people, share stories, and make a difference in her community. In addition, she looks forward to planning a wedding with her fiancée, Chris.

ABOUT WELI
The Women’s Education & Leadership Institute (WELI) was founded in early 2011 by community leaders who saw a need to advance the education and economic status of women and families in Monterey County. The WELI program consists of summer leadership training, an on-campus, student-led WELI Club, powerful mentorship with community leaders, and a $2,500 financial award per student, making this a life-changing experience.

Since its inception, the WELI program has graduated more than 250 scholars and granted approximately $500,000 in scholarships. To support WELI, call us at 831-755-6810.
