Dear donors and supporters,

Happy new year! May 2023 bring joy and prosperity to you and yours. I hope you have stayed safe during the recent storms. Our thoughts are with those who have experienced loss and uncertainty as a result of our current weather conditions.

In 2022, we celebrated philanthropy in a very special way. We honored David and Susan Gill and the Tanimura Family Foundation for their love of students and the community. You can read about it below.

Here at the Hartnell College Foundation, we are thankful for your support through MC Gives. More students will receive scholarships this year thanks to your support.

There are a lot of initiatives and events already in the works for 2023, including the WELI Soiree on February 25th and Party IN the Library in May. We invite you to be a part of these events as an attendee or as a sponsor. You can also become a member of our President’s Circle by giving $1,000 per year, and you will receive an array of benefits.

The Hartnell College Foundation’s purpose is to cultivate resources that champion student success and support the College District. I personally invite you to continue to be a part of this purpose this year and to witness transformation in our communities.

GRATITUDE AND GIVING Celebrating Philanthropy

The Hartnell College Foundation is happy to honor the Tanimura Family Foundation and David and Susan Gill as exemplary philanthropists in our community. Both were recognized at the National Philanthropy Day for the Central Coast event in November.

The Gills and their heart
Susan and David Gill are from King City and have been generous donors and engaged volunteers for nonprofit organizations for many years. They have changed lives through their support of education, youth development, health, and the arts. David and Susan play many roles in the community – founders, board members, volunteers, major donors, advisors, event chairs, and strategic planners, which is why being recognized as the 2022 Outstanding Philanthropists of the Year for the Central Coast is so fitting for this dynamic couple. The Hartnell College Foundation was honored to nominate them for this award.

“The Gills exemplify the concept of altruism and philanthropy, serving something greater than yourself, whether it be your community, family, or the world as a whole,” said Jackie Cruz, vice president of advancement and development and executive director for the Hartnell College Foundation. “The deeper purpose in life enriches life itself, and it is a real honor to work with Susan and David to make our community stronger – one student at a time.”

The Gills are get-it-done people and do not seek fanfare or accolades. They lead by example with generosity that inspires others to give. To work with David and Susan is to witness joyful philanthropy in action.

David and Susan Gill have supported the Hartnell College Foundation for 24 years. Their extraordinarily generous lifetime giving to Hartnell has included a broad range of programs, such as seed funds for the King City Education Center and its recent expansion, support of scholarships, athletics, the arts, seed funds for the Agriculture Business, and Technology Center at the Alisal Campus, the Women’s Education and Leadership Institute, and the Foundation’s Party In the Library.

Their contributions extend beyond financial to include their volunteer leadership, service, and fundraising on behalf of the College, which has brought in millions of dollars for students.

David and Susan have both served on the Hartnell College Foundation Board of Directors, for a combined total of 19 years. In these roles, they have provided thoughtful guidance and leadership. Susan was Co-Chair of the successful Hartnell King City Education Center Campaign. The Gills and their friends were the driving force behind this project, which will serve generations to come.

The Hartnell College Foundation’s Party In the Library event would not be the success that it is without Susan Gill. She has played a role in the event since the beginning and chaired or co-chaired for five years. Susan served as the co-chair of Measure T, helping the College secure $167 million dollars to expand higher education and workforce training throughout the Salinas Valley corridor.

David, a recognized leader in the agriculture industry, is the chair of Hartnell’s President’s Agriculture Steering Committee, helping the College work in partnership with the agriculture community. The Gills are involved in every major philanthropic effort in South County, and many are County-wide.

The Tanimura Family Foundation sees community as family
It is said that there are only a few family legacies that have embedded their roots into California’s soil like that of Tanimura & Antle. Since patriarchs George Tanimura and Bob Antle joined together in 1982, the name has risen to one synonymous with innovation, intention, and sustainability. The Tanimura Family Foundation has played an equally vital role in the Central Coast communities through its philanthropy. This made them the natural choice for recognition as the 2022 Outstanding Philanthropic Foundation of the Year for the Central Coast when nominated by the Hartnell College Foundation.

“The Tanimura Family Foundation is an exceptional philanthropic partner. Throughout the years, they have provided vital seed funds for some of the most important and innovative work that exists today for our students and community,” said Cruz. “Their unwavering commitment to education is at the core of their foundation values and we are immensely grateful for their partnership.”

“The mission of the Foundation is to encourage education,” said Kerry Varney, executive director for the Tanimura Family Foundation. “We want to give back to the workforce so their children can get educated and perhaps come back and work for Tanimura & Antle in an administrative position.”

The Tanimura Family Foundation has been a tremendous partner to the Hartnell College Foundation, granting a total of $1.1 million since 2007. It has provided funding for a broad range of programs, including capital support for Hartnell’s Soledad and Castroville campuses, and funding for annual and endowed scholarships, academic programs, internships, and athletics.

In 2007, the Tanimura Family Foundation transformed the ag program at Hartnell College as a founding member of the Ag Steering Committee and the Agricultural Business and Technology Institute housed at the East Alisal Campus. Most recently, their significant support of Hartnell’s two new campuses in Soledad and Castroville will allow the College to serve those communities in perpetuity.

The Foundation’s philanthropy expands further into a partnership that supports paid internships for students. The Tanimura Family Foundation has provided annual funding for ag research internships for several years, and then established an endowment for the internship program. During the pandemic, when students faced financial hardships and uncertainties about the future, and when internship opportunities were scarce, the Tanimura Family Foundation was flexible with its endowment, allowing Hartnell College to turn internship opportunities into scholarships for transfer students. Because of this, students did not have to put their future college plans on hold. This is the type of responsive, visionary, and caring philanthropy practiced by the Tanimura Family Foundation.

The Foundation supports multiple organizations and programs on the Central Coast. Since 2011, the Tanimura Family Foundation has provided more than $4 million to the local community in the areas of youth, healthcare, education, community development, and human services.

“The Tanimuras are the most generous, kind, loving, down-to-earth, and humble people you will ever meet,” said Varney. “They love to help people.”

The Hartnell College Foundation thanks The Tanimura Family Foundation and Susan and David Gill for their vision and for their heart for our students.

TIME FOR GIVING Options for year-end giving

If you are like many of us, you are looking to save money on this year’s taxes. There are ways to make a year-end gift, other than a cash gift, and still enjoy valuable tax benefits. Here are just a few of the options you might want to consider for your end-of-year planning:

  • GIFT OF YOUR PROPERTY

Do you have CDs, stocks or bonds that are producing little or no return? Why not make a gift of these low-performing assets to us, and receive a charitable deduction? You can also give your real estate, art or other property, and benefit from a deduction.

  • GIFT OF YOUR PROPERTY FOR INCOME

If you are looking for income in the future, why not make a gift of property to fund a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust? Your property can be sold tax-free, and you may receive income for the rest of your life. With a charitable gift annuity, this income is fixed so there is the possibility that some of your payment will be tax-free.

  • FUTURE PROPERTY GIFT

Did you know there are gifts everyone can make to benefit from charitable giving? If you don’t want to give your stock or real estate today, you can still enjoy your property during your lifetime while making a gift to us through your will or trust. A bequest of your property will provide your estate with an estate tax charitable deduction, which means the money saved can go to your loved ones.

To learn more about these options for end-of-year gifts, or to view an illustration of the benefits of making a gift of your property, please call us. We look forward to helping you meet your year-end goals! There are many ways we can help you fulfill your philanthropic goals. SHARE OUR SPIRIT ‘Tis the Season of Giving

Join our supporters and Share Our Spirit during this season of giving. Together we can make a difference.

For most of us, our financial priorities can be narrowed down to two primary goals: paying less taxes and having income that will last our entire lives. The year-end is a perfect time to consider some minor adjustments that can help secure both.  With the right tools you can:

  • Save taxes
  • Increase year income
  • Help others while helping yourself

If you have ever wanted to make a significant difference with Hartnell College Foundation and its mission, there is no better time than now. We can help you find a way to make a satisfying gift that moves our mission forward, while at the same time saving you money, and possibly providing you with new sources of income.

  • Make a Gift Today. If you want to make an impact and receive income tax savings, make your gift now and see the results of your generosity in action immediately.
  • Avoid Capital Gains. If you own stock (or any appreciated asset), give that asset to our organization. Our mission receives the current value of the stock, and you receive an income tax deduction in the same amount even though you paid less for it years ago.
  • Start New Income. Fund a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust and receive the double benefit of tax savings and lifetime payments.
  • Blend Your Giving. For even more impact, consider a gift today of your IRA distribution, real property, appreciated assets, or cash, and complement it with a gift in your will or estate plan. You benefit by seeing your gift in action, while also knowing you are building a legacy that will grow.

There are many ways we can help you fulfill your philanthropic goals while enjoying tax savings and income advantages. Contact Vice President of Advancement and Development and Executive Director for the Foundation, Jackie Cruz at jcruz@hartnell.edu or call (831) 444-2446. CREATE AN ENDOWMENT
Your Legacy Now and Forever

You already know the joy that comes from making a difference. When you join us in our mission, you have the immediate satisfaction of seeing your gift in action. An endowment gives you that same feeling, plus something more. It offers you the feeling of accomplishment knowing your positive impact will continue forever in your name, automatically.

A Simple Agreement
Something lasting forever sounds complicated, but it really is simple. An endowment has three essential parts:

  • You make a gift to establish an endowment
  • We sign an agreement with you detailing how the gift will be invested and distributed
  • We handle the investments and distributions

How the Endowment Agreement Works
When you are considering an endowment, we work with you to word it, so it follows your wishes for all time, having the effect you desire. We create an agreement with all the details so you will know how the endowment will be invested and distributed.

We Do the Work – You Enjoy the Legacy
A major feature of the endowment is that once it is started, we do all the work. We invest the funds along with other endowed funds, creating economy of scale to maximize your endowment. We invest all our endowed funds according to our endowment policy. Set by our board, it generally provides that endowed funds are invested to produce stable, predictable growth. Each year a set percentage from your endowed fund is distributed according to your endowment agreement. If the endowed fund grows, so does your annual distribution. Your impact may become greater each year. You can also put a cap on your fund, so it ends after a certain term of years.

Possible for Everyone
You might think endowed funds are only for the wealthy. However, anyone can start one. You can create an endowment with your will or trust. It does not have to be created in your lifetime. In addition, you can fund it with an amazing array of assets. Real property (including life estates), life insurance, appreciated stock, investment accounts, jewelry and more are all possible sources of endowed funds.

To learn more about how an endowment can help you achieve your goals, please contact us. We welcome the opportunity to answer further questions and work with you and your advisors.

Dear donors and supporters,

I hope you and yours are enjoying the turning of the season and staying well. The cold mornings, and at times, rainy evenings remind us that the end of the year is just a few months away. And with these reminders, my thoughts turn to those students who will need extra assistance during the winter and through the holiday season.

I am so excited to share with you that the Hartnell College Foundation was accepted as one of the non-profits to be featured in Monterey County Gives! Through this platform, we are focusing our fundraising on ‘the greatest needs’ to support our students.

Our motto is to keep students learning. I invite you to help us fulfill our goal of providing support where most needed.

In addition, I am proud to share once again that the King City Education Center is completed and now in use. This has been a dream for so many of us and with the help of the Measure T Bond and community support, the Center looks amazing and it is serving its purpose.

As always, thank you for all of your support. We could not do all that we do for students and this community without you by our side.

Be well,

Jackie Cruz

KING CITY CENTER
Hartnell continues to thrive in South County

The Hartnell College Foundation invited donors to its King City Education Center expansion on Oct. 14 for a luncheon and ribbon-cutting ceremony, celebrating the completion of an 18-month project that doubled the size of the downtown center.

Hartnell Interim Superintendent/President Raul Rodriguez said the addition of new facilities in the King City center’s expansion “means we’re going to be able to open up new opportunities for students, new majors, and help students get degrees and be able to start and finish here.”

Hartnell Community College District Trustee Candi DePauw, whose District 7 includes King City, cut the ribbon on the 12,500-square-foot addition, which opened this summer and began holding face-to-face classes on Aug. 30.

Speaking on behalf of the entire Hartnell Governing Board, DePauw said, “We’re all proud that the day has come in King City when we’re able to have this facility to offer to our students.”

The center’s new wing includes wet and dry science labs, essential for courses in the sciences, engineering fields and many agricultural programs, as well as two additional state-of-the-art classrooms, a Community Room and a Panther Learning Lab center for tutoring and study.

King City resident Susan Gill, a Hartnell College Foundation board member and chair of the King City Expansion Committee, announced that the fundraising drive has exceeded its $1 million goal and is approaching $1.2 million. The support will help to fund center operations over the next five years.

Gill noted that naming gifts for the center’s labs, classrooms and other facilities reflect the support of Hartnell employees and graduates and many King City-area companies. “They all believe in Hartnell, and they believe in changing the lives of our local students and families,” she said.

Other event speakers included current King City student Raquel Arredondo, a participant in the Teacher Pathway Program, who said, “I want to thank all the supporters that brought the King City center to fruition, giving the current and future students of South County an opportunity to expand their knowledge and achieve their goals.”

ADVOCATING FOR EDUCATION
Leading by example

No one is happier to see the King City Education Center expand than former Center Dean, Paulette Bumbalough.

“I am so thrilled to see this addition to the Center,” she said. “I am very proud that Hartnell College is in our town.”

This mother to three daughters, grandma to 15 and great-grandma to 8 stays busy volunteering and giving back to her beloved community in South County. She is an advocate for youth and higher education.

“I am a big believer in higher education and so inspired by students who come up to me after years have passed, and talk about how they love having Hartnell College in King City,” she said.

Bumbalough is a Hartnell College alumna; she worked on the main campus in Salinas for 13 years before taking the role of dean in 2003 when the King City campus opened. She retired in 2015, but she admits retirement has kept her busy.

“I am busier now! But I love it,” she said. “I am involved in many non-profits.”

Paulette was born in Hawaii. That’s where she met her husband, Jerry. They moved to Monterey County 40 years ago and made King City their hometown 20 years ago. Jerry passed away in 2019.

Bumbalough volunteers for various organizations in King City and is part of the King City Expansion Committee for the King City Education Center. Paulette is also a donor to the expansion and an active Rotarian.

“I love to give in volunteering time and in donations,” she said. “In leading by example, others will also be inspired to give and be as excited as I am about Hartnell.”

IRA Charitable Rollover A Sweet Choice

If your IRA is life’s dessert, the thought of paying taxes on a distribution you would rather not take may leave a sour taste in your mouth. It does not have to.

There is a sweeter choice. Rather than take the required minimum distribution, call your IRA administrator and ask them to gift all or part of the RMD to Hartnell College Foundation. Make sure the distribution comes directly to our mission and not to you. When you do, you:

  • Do not pay income tax on the distribution
  • Satisfy your RMD up to $100,000
